The USAT Liberty was a United States Army cargo ship torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in 1942. The American military then stripped it, with locals doing the same soon after. It sat on the beach rusting for years and did not move from the beach until a volcanic eruption thrusted it into the water in 1963. It is now a popular diving spot in Bali and a great spot to earn your PADI Open Water Certification with OK Divers!

The wreck is located in a small fishing village called Tulamben, off the northeast coast of Bali. Divers will find it at a maximum depth of 30 meters, with the highest area of the wreck being at 4 meters. Even snorkelers can catch a glimpse of this beauty!It’s amazing to see how things transform from land to sea. The ship has truly transformed as it has made a home in the deep blue. During the rainy season, it may drop to 10 m, which still is not too bad! Frequent divers of the wreck believe the best time to dive is in the early morning. There are a few interesting creatures who dwell in the ship during the early morning hours, including a barracuda and bumpheads. You may even spot a sharks! Plus, diving early and getting back on time to enjoy a hearty breakfast doesn’t sound like a bad idea, does it?
